One, two, three, four, CIA declares meme war

Yesterday Wikileaks began yet another dump of highly classified documents and materials stolen from the US government.  This batch of data is being called “Vault 7” and includes all of the tools, tactics, and techniques used by the CIA to conduct cyber-warfare, computer hacking, and technical intelligence gathering. Wikileaks is claiming that these files were […]

Today the families of SFC Matthew Lewellen, SSG Kevin McEnroe and SSG James (Jimmy) Moriarty held a press conference to demand accountability from the Jordanian government after one of their soldiers identified as Muarek Abu Tayeh brutally murdered the three 5th Special Forces Group soldiers during a routine checkpoint stop outside a military facility. Part of the […]

The 75th Ranger Regiment hits the ground in Syria for Raqqa offensive

After months of planning and deliberations, the 75th Ranger Regiment has been deployed to Syria to participate in the war against ISIS as the coalition closes in on the so-called caliphate’s capital city of Raqqa.  Yesterday, the first images emerged of Stryker armored vehicles on their way to Manbij.  This comes weeks after Rangers deployed […]

Watch: SEAL Team One in Vietnam

Recently coming across this vintage film of Navy SEALs in Vietnam, I thought I would share it with everyone on SOFREP.  The national archives describes it as: This film shows Navy SEALs in action in the jungles of Long Phu, Vietnam. SEALs are seen as they marched single file and crouched down in tall brush while […]

Special Operations Command urgently needs to rethink its approach to Operational Security

Much has been made about Operational Security (OPSEC) in recent years, much of it revolving around high level politicians or even congressional staffers leaking information about sensitive military operations such as the SEAL Team Six raid in Pakistan that killed Bin Laden.  While it is true that Pentagon staffers and politicians leak information to the […]

Sniper: Billy Zane is an under-utilized national asset

Following hot on the heels of Sniper: Reloaded (The Return of Zane) in which Gunny Beckett’s son named Brandon Beckett won mad Tom Berenger awards for racking up baddies by the boatload, Sniper: Ghost Shooter (Zane is an under-utilized national asset) sees Brandon put back into the shit against the backdrop of Central Asian pipeline politics. […]

And the Oscar goes to… Alt-Qaeda!

When I watched the documentary “White Helmets” I was somewhat less impressed than the Oscars apparently were.  This week, the White Helmets documentary took home an Oscar for best documentary in the short subject category.  The documentary is about a group of Syrians who wear white protective helmets and rescue civilians from bombed out buildings. […]

Trump’s joint session speech looked presidential, but with a few rough patches

Last night I tuned in to President Trump’s joint session speech, his first big speech in front of the three branches of our government.  Candidly, I was not looking forward to it, as Trump’s speeches are often meandering exercises in free association that leave you more confused at the end.  However, this speech struck me […]

Why is it so easy to get inside our heads and manipulate Americans?

This year at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Committee) special guest speakers included none less than President Trump at an event viewed by many as a barometer for the future of the American right.  It isn’t unusual for CPAC to have some minor controversies but this time many were shocked as Trump supporters enthusiastically waved miniature Russian […]

Never before seen footage: 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions in combat

A new documentary released by Joe Joynt depicts Rangers assigned to 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions in combat in Afghanistan.  During the course of these deployments, Rangers Justin Allen and Jonathan Peney tragically lost their lives.  This short documentary reminds Americans that we are still at war in Afghanistan, a war that many would like […]

Seaspray, the CIA Shadow of TF 160th

After the tragedy that unfolded at Desert One, the attempted Delta Force rescue of American hostages held in Iran in 1980, the Pentagon was forced back to the drawing board.  While it is easy to take for granted the Special Operations infrastructure that we have today, thirty years ago the military was still struggling in […]

Ranger Helicopter Assault Force: Learning to assault from the Little Bird

While going through some old photographs the other day I came across several from a training exercise that I participated in back in 2005 on Fort Campbell.  The base is home to the 101st Airborne and 5th Special Forces Group (where I later served) but 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment also resides there.  At the […]
