The SOFREP crew hits Vegas for SHOT Show 2017

SOFREP has now hit the ground for SHOT Show 2017. Velcro, ball caps, and cargo pants make up the official dress code: business tactical. We’ll be walking around the show and having meetings for the duration of the event. The crew from the Loadout Room had a great day out on the range today, so you can […]

Daash and drugs: The zombie militants of ISIS

“I shot him with four Dragunov rounds and seven M16 rounds, but he still didn’t die.” Listening to the YPG member relate this story reminded me of an interview with a female YPJ fighter I’d read before I left the United States. She had said that the Daash are completely insane, have bizarre beards, and are all […]

Monica Crowley: A few french fries short of a happy meal

The President Elect’s National Security Council strategic communications director has a bit of baggage; Soviet Union baggage for one.  Monica Crowley posted this picture on Twitter recently: I’m surprised she didn’t snap some pics Auschwitz and post that death camps work too.  There is nothing wrong, or unpatriotic, about calling for increased border security but Crowley’s […]

The garrote wire | For sentry removal

First a disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only.  I built this garrote wire to conduct research and have no intention of actually using it and neither should you.  Like any weapon, this is not a toy.  You should not “play” with or “test” it on any human being under any circumstances.  Accidents happen, […]

Mattis confirmation hearing: No mad dog, but a warrior diplomat

Today was General James Mattis‘ confirmation hearing, following which the waiver for him to serve as Secretary of Defense was signed off on.  Contradicting the internet memes and media reputation, General Mattis conducted himself as a the well-read professional that we would have expected from him, rather than a “mad dog.” While a confirmation hearing […]

Military leadership to blame for SEAL Team Six war crimes

Yesterday The Intercept published an explosive article titled “The Crimes of SEAL Team Six” which accuses the unit of institutionalizing war crimes from a former unit commander on down into the enlisted ranks.  Many SOFREP readers wrote to us asking if the allegations in the article are correct.  While SOFREP cannot independently verify every claim made […]

A female Cultural Support Team member and Special Forces enabler speaks out

First could you explain some of your background to us. Years in service, rank, MOS, deployment locations, units deployed with, other pertinent details… I spent 12-years in the Army Reserves (1982-1994), took a 14-year break, and joined the National Guard in 2008. While in the Reserves, I served basically as a generator repair tech, and […]

Libya: Know the players in the game

Not that anyone is keeping track, but we still have American (along with British, Italian, and French) Special Operations Forces in Libya.  The entire conflict there has taken a backseat as the Western world has focused on Aleppo and Mosul, but the following report gives a good breakdown of the various players on the ground. […]

Deranged German hippy to march on Aleppo

“People like me think that if five or ten thousand people are marching and getting everyone’s attention, then it’s impossible that they would bomb you. I think if it really happened and they bombed a peaceful march, then this world is worth nothing,” Anna Alboth said. “People like me in safe countries can’t take it […]

Book review: ‘Recce: Small Team Missions Behind Enemy Lines’

Most people are familiar with the British SAS and American Navy SEALs. Some may have heard of the Rhodesian Light Infantry and Selous Scouts, but nearly lost to contemporary military history is the South African Recces. These white, black, and interracial soldiers pulled off some of the most hair-raising operations that you have never heard […]

Christmas loot: Three must-read books

How did we do this Christmas?  There are a few books I received that I wanted to point out as something special.  I was able to review a few chapters of my friend Paul Ciolino’s new book about the history of paramedics prior to publication, and highly recommend it.  It is a story largely unwritten until […]

My vision is augmented: From science fiction to science reality

We’ve all played video games where the protagonist has some kind of virtual heads-up display that shows relevant data such as mini-maps, available ammunition, heading, waypoints, and more. The U.S. military has struggled with various future soldier concepts that would incorporate this, making little baby steps each time toward the end game. It seems we […]
