Ukraine Boosts Military With New Swedish Combat Boats

Steel Front, a Ukrainian initiative supplying tactical boats to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, has supported that nation’s defense against Russia by delivering three Swedish CB90 tactical combat boats. These fast assault crafts from Saab’s Dockstavarvet for Sweden are bolstering the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The CB90 is a robust vessel measuring 52 feet long and 12.6 feet in beam. It has a twin 625-horsepower diesel engine accompanied by two water jets, reaching up to 40 knots (46 mph) and a 240-nautical-mile range.

Operated by three sailors, the CB90 can carry over 20 amphibious personnel. Its armament includes naval mines, Browning machine guns, remote-controlled weapon stations, depth charges, and grenade launchers.

Financial and Operational Support

Steel Front revealed that providing these boats and the necessary training for Ukrainian forces cost over $4.1 million. Since Russia’s advance on Kyiv in February 2022, Steel Front has contributed more than $200 million to Ukraine’s civilians and military.

Owned by Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov, Steel Front is operating under Metinvest Holdings, a mining and metals corporation operating globally. Akhmetov has been a vocal critic of the Russian invasion, even suing the Russian government for damages to his businesses in the European Court of Human Rights.

A company spokesperson said:

“The Steel Front’s role is to support Ukraine and Ukrainians in any way we can, to ensure the aggressor’s ultimate defeat.”

“There is no doubt the Black Sea is an important front and our aim is that these powerful boats will make a significant difference to Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.”

Increasing Naval Capabilities

Ukraine also receives additional surface vehicles from global allies to strengthen its armed forces.

In June, Canada confirmed it was going to send ten rigid-hull boats to the Ukrainians, along with drones, weapons, and combat support vehicles. In May, Australia sent Sentinel inflatable boats as part of a $65.6 million military aid package.

The Netherlands pledged two Alkmaar-class mine countermeasure vessels last year, while Turkey began constructing an Ada-class corvette for Ukraine. In 2022, the United States announced the delivery of 23 Metal Shark military vessels under a $450 million assistance package.

Commitment to Ukraine’s Defense

The delivery of these CB90 boats represents a significant boost to Ukraine’s naval capabilities.

The fast, agile nature of these vessels makes them ideal for a variety of missions, from rapid troop deployment to coastal defense operations. Their advanced weaponry and high-speed maneuverability provide a substantial tactical advantage in the contested waters of the Black Sea.

Steel Front’s continuous support exemplifies the strong international resolve to aid Ukraine in its time of need. This support comes not only in the form of equipment and training. But also in the solidarity shown by nations and companies worldwide. The collaborative effort underscores a unified stand against aggression and a commitment to upholding international law and sovereignty.

Future Prospects

As the conflict continues, the importance of such contributions cannot be overstated. The ongoing delivery of military aid and equipment will likely play a crucial role in sustaining Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The integration of these advanced vessels into Ukraine’s naval strategy will help maintain a robust defensive posture and potentially deter further aggression.

In summary, Steel Front’s delivery of the CB90 tactical combat boats, along with additional international support, is a pivotal element in enhancing Ukraine’s defense infrastructure. This collective effort aims to provide Ukraine with the tools needed to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its people amidst ongoing conflict.
